What's Black and White and Black All Over?

A few of you know my secret. I have "issues" with newsprint. The smell of it makes me nauseous. I almost gag, just thinking about touching newsprint. You would think I'd had a bad experience with newspapers...

In a valiant effort I overcame my repulsion in order to plan and execute an excellent combined Young Women's activity tonight. We solicited newspapers from ward members and had quite a stack of them donated to us. We divided everyone into three teams. Each team got a big stack of newspapers, scissors, and scotch tape. Then, they had 45 minutes to create costumes for everyone on their team, following an assigned theme. The themes were; Clowning Around, Down on the Farm, and Wedding Party.

The girls had a blast! And I, as the designated photographer, did not have to touch any newsprint. During the clean-up phase I held open the trash bags and ran the vacuum. Enjoy some photos from the evening and see if you can tell who is who (or what is what).

  1. Very cute idea. It looks like everyone had a great time. I'm glad you survived your first joint activity...and maybe even enjoyed it?

  2. I sort of wish I could have been there. I always love creative activities where I can show of a little! I bet they had a lot of fun and I am glad you didn't have to get your hands too dirty (or inky). Those girls look way too old now- I recognize a lot of them.

  3. We've been gone too long. I don't recognize ANY of these girls!! I do recognize Sister Himley and Sister Morrison (I think).

  4. Great idea. Looks like they had a blast. You are so creative. Maybe I'll have a chance to steal this idea some day.

Working like mad today getting ready for the court of honor. Vicki is at work, Chip is picking up great grandmothers, Harvey is sick, Matt is grumpy... so what's new...

  6. I am so excited for the Stockdale Young Women. I have to agree with your attitde of "a little work never killed anyone" from your previous YW post. I remember once a month we did a service activity. We visited a nursing home for one year and then we shelved books at the library. Both activities from the good old Stockdale ward. I dn't know if 12/13 year old girls have always been as boy crazy as today but I know for sure we weren't so vocal about it. That is one of the things that never ceases to amaze me. Those girls are open books and sometimes the rating is way beyond (what I percieve them able to percieve) a PG. They know things I don't know as a women who has delivered 7 children. I have to confess I also am of the elderly generation with my thoughts and ideals. I do love them and know they are capable of carrying on the kingdom which makes our job as young women leaders all the more challenging, daunting, and sacred. (Does this mean you will be auctioning off another smocked outfit. I am buying it for one of my yet unborn grandchildren to be blessed in!)
